The Impact of Moisture on Plastic and Wood Pallets

In the world of shipping and logistics, pallets play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of goods. Wood and plastic pallets are the two most commonly used materials in the industry, each with its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. One of the key factors that influences the performance and longevity of these pallets is moisture.

Wood pallets, being a natural and porous material, are highly susceptible to moisture absorption. This can lead to a range of issues, including warping, rotting, and the growth of mold or mildew.(as seen in the image below) As the moisture content in the wood increases, its structural integrity may be compromised, posing risks to the products being transported. In addition, the added weight from the absorbed moisture can increase shipping costs and make handling more difficult.

On the other hand, plastic pallets are inherently resistant to moisture, thanks to their non-porous and non-absorbent nature. This makes them an ideal choice for industries where moisture exposure is inevitable, such as food and pharmaceuticals. Unlike wood pallets, plastic pallets will not warp, rot, or foster the growth of mold or mildew, ensuring the safety and longevity of the products they support.
